NEW BERN - CCR recently completed an archaeological data recovery in historic New Bern, NC on the site of the home of Samuel Cornell.  Cornell, a wealthy merchant residing in New Bern from 1754 to 1771, was a close friend of Governor Tryon and instrumental in raising funds for the construction of Tryon Palace in New Bern.  Prior to the American Revolution, New Bern was the center of commerce and Craven County was the most populous county in the colony.  Only the portion of the site that would be disturbed was excavated, and the investigation revealed ballast stone foundations, postholes, and an intact eighteenth century midden.  Also recorded was evidence of the 1769 hurricane which devastated New Bern and damaged the Cornell House.
