Countywide Architectural Survey
Hertford County, North Carolina

CCR conducted a countywide architectural survey of Hertford County.  The work was commissioned and administered by the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office (HPO) with funding from the federal Preserve America program and the state Golden Leaf Foundation.  The fieldwork, conducted between January 2010 and January 2011, covered all rural and municipal areas of the county outside of the preexisting National Register historic districts of Harrellsville and Murfreesboro and the proposed National Register District in Ahoskie.

The purpose was to identify and record all properties of historic or architectural merit in order to increase the knowledge, awareness, and understanding of the county’s built heritage and to facilitate preservation efforts.  Approximately 339 rural sites and 206 municipal sites were documented, including digital photography, mapping, oral history, site plans, data entry, and written narratives.

General historical research was performed during the course of the survey to establish a context for the architectural history.  Several hundred additional resources that were not individually recorded, but appeared to be fifty years of age or older, were map-coded according to building type on USGS quad maps.  The project resulted in a database of architectural resources dating from the eighteenth century to the twentieth century, additions to the HPO National Register Study List, and public outreach to local historical groups.
